Visor Card: Communicating Safely with Police
Overview
The Ontario Association of the Deaf (OAD) and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are proud to introduce Project Visor Card—a first-of-its-kind initiative in Ontario designed to make communication between Deaf or Hard of Hearing drivers and police officers safer, easier, and more effective. Get one in English or French for yourself!
The Visor Card fits conveniently on your car’s sun visor, making it easy to display during traffic stops. It allows drivers to quickly notify officers of their hearing needs and access clear communication instructions.

How The Visor Card Works
When you are stopped (pulled over) by a police officer:
Tip: Do not reach for your license or documents until the officer requests them. The Visor Card ensures that police understand your hearing needs, helping prevent misunderstandings and keeping the interaction safe. It ensures clear and safe communication.
1. Stay Calm: Acknowledge and keep your hands visible on the steering wheel.
3. Display Your Visor Card: Flip down your sun visor so the card is immediately visible to the approaching officer.
2. Signal and Pull Over Safely: Move to the shoulder and, if possible, near a light source to assist with communicating.
4. Follow Communication Guidance: Use the card’s instructions for writing, lip-reading, or texting.
Why The Visor Card Matters
Traffic stops can be stressful for anyone, but Deaf and Hard of Hearing drivers face unique communication challenges.
The Visor Card:
-
Alerts police to your Deaf or Hard of Hearing status immediately.
-
Provides visual instructions and communication methods (writing, lip-reading, texting).
-
Helps prevent misinterpretations and potential safety risks.
-
Promotes efficient and respectful interactions between drivers and officers.
