Deaf Terminology

Understanding Deaf Terminology Matters

Language matters. The words we use to describe deafness reflect our understanding, attitudes, and respect for the diverse experiences within the Deaf, deafened, and hard of hearing communities.

This page is designed to help individuals, organizations, service providers, and the public understand commonly used terms related to deafness and Deaf culture. Using accurate and respectful terminology helps promote inclusion, dignity, and cultural awareness.

The Issue

What are the “proper” terms and definitions to use when referring to deafness and Deaf people?

Our Position

The Deaf, deafened, and hard of hearing communities are distinct groups, each with unique identities, experiences, and communication preferences. There is no single term that fits everyone.

Using proper and respectful terminology acknowledges these differences and demonstrates respect for individual identity and community culture.

Why This Matters

Respectful and accurate language supports inclusion, accessibility, and understanding. By using correct terminology, we acknowledge Deaf culture, identity, and lived experience—and help create a more inclusive society for everyone.

Using respectful and accurate terminology helps to:

  • Promote inclusion and accessibility across all spaces and communities

  • Respect the cultural and linguistic identities of Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals

  • Reduce stigma and misinformation surrounding deafness and Deaf culture

  • Strengthen relationships between Deaf and non-Deaf communities
